Your first month of strength training: what to expect

Week one feels awkward, week four feels like a different body. Here’s how we coach new members through their first 12 sessions.
The short version
- Sessions 1–4: learn the patterns with light loads.
- Sessions 5–8: add weight in small, boring jumps.
- Sessions 9–12: first test day, and your first PB.
Sessions 1–4: learn the patterns
Your first four classes are about the five movements everything else is built on: squat, hinge, push, pull and carry. You’ll use a light bar, kettlebells or just your body weight. It might feel too easy. That’s the point: we want the pattern to be automatic before the load goes up.
Sessions 5–8: small, boring jumps
Now we add weight, usually 2.5 to 5 kilos at a time. Your coach writes your numbers on the board so you can see the trend. Expect some sore legs the day after squats; it settles within a couple of weeks as your body adapts.
Sessions 9–12: test day
In week four we run a friendly test day. Nobody maxes out. Instead you’ll work up to a heavy set of three you can do with good form. For most new members it’s the first time they’ve seen proof of how much stronger they’ve become in a month.
What helps most
- Come twice a week, minimum. Consistency beats intensity.
- Sleep and eat enough protein. See the meal-prep post.
- Write down your numbers, or let the app do it.
